Flea Market

Start cleaning up and get rid of those items you don't need. Come sell them at the El Rito Library's Spring Flea Market! Everyone is welcome to come and sell. A small donation of 10% for the Library is suggested. The El Rito Library sponsors two flea markets a year. One in the Spring and one in the Fall (usually early October). Bring your own tables and chairs. Pack It In - Pack It Out. Come One - Come All. It's all happening on Saturday, April 26, 2008 starting at 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

2nd Annual Live and Silent Auction

We are gearing up for our next fundraiser! Last year we had our first Live and Silent Auction which was a lot of fun and the most successful fundraiser we have had, so we just have to do this again this year. The Live and Silent Auction is scheduled for Saturday, December 1, 2007 starting at 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at the old gym at Northern New Mexico College campus. Our own Board Member, Donald Martinez, Jr. is also a professional auctioneer and has agreed to help out the Library again. Soooo - Local Artists, and Community Members, we need your help again this year. Could you please donate any items (gift certificates or simply bought items from local businesses) or artwork that you think would be good for this great cause. If you are interested in making a donation, please contact the Library at 581-4608. We appreciate any type of donation. All items need to be brought into the Library by Thursday, November 29, 2007 by 5:30 p.m.

2007 Legislative Money

Thanks to a bill introduced by Senator Richard C. Martinez and signed by Governor Richardson in the last legislative session, the RAIL libraries finally got their checks. The Abiquiu, Embudo, Truchas and El Rito Libraries all received an equal amount of the bill total. While this money will be used for general operating expenses, it needs to be spent by June 30, 2008. We will continue to have fundraising events throughout the year and keep the money in reserve until we absolutely need it. Please thank Senator Martinez and let him know how grateful we all are for his support of rural libraries.

Anxious Young Patrons Use New Computers

The Library has a total of seven (7) new computers for public access. This was possible through a grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and a capital outlay appropriation from Senator Richard Martinez. As you can see, two of our young patrons could not wait to use the educational programs that came with these computers.

Summer Art Workshops

Hey Kids - It's Summer and you know what that means! Yes, the El Rito Library is again offering free Summer Art Workshops for children from El Rito and the surrounding communities. Come sign up for one, two, or as many workshops you want to attend. The sign-up sheet is located at the Librarian's desk. Snacks and drinks are provided.

These are the current workshops available and more might be added later on:

Poetry - 13 years and up - Thursdays from 7:00 to 8:30 pm
Arts and Crafts - Ages 5-8 - Mondays from 10:30 am to 12:00 noon
Radio Play - 8 years and up - Wednesdays from 1:00 to 2:30 pm
Retablo Painting - 8 years and up - Wednesdays from 7:00 to 9:00 pm
Bodyspeak - 13 years and up - Mondays from 6:00 to 8:00 pm
Tinworking - 8 years and up - July 23rd & 24th - 6:00 - 7:30 pm

Parents and Grandparents, sign up your kids now and let them build self-esteem and have fun with other children. This program is made possible by the New Mexico Children's Foundation, Santa Fe Rotary Foundation for the Arts, and the El Rito Studio Tour.

6th Annual Community Cleanup

It's time for our 6th Annual Community Cleanup! On Saturday, May 12, 2007 starting at 9:00 a.m. at the Library and finishing off at 12:00 noon. A picnic at the Library Grounds will immediately follow for all participants. Pick up trash bags at the Library and don't forget to bring your own gloves.

As being part of the community, please get involved. Make a difference in your community, even if it is only for one day. Last year we picked up many, many truckloads of trash. It's only for three hours, but it does make a difference. Let's set an example to our children by showing we care about out environment. If you can't come to the Library, pick up trash in front of your own private land by the road. The Ojo Caliente Highway Department's District Office will come pick up the trash bags left on the side of the roads on Monday, May 14, 2007. Thank you and hope to see you there!

New Children’s Room

We are happy to announce that we have just completed our new Children's library room. We painted the children's table and bookshelves red, yellow and blue. All the children's books and videos have been shelved and ready to be taken out. We have little chairs for our little patrons to come in and sit and read/view books or they can lie down on the colorful ABC floor mat. We are still working on Grandma Rena's corner, but she continues to read every Saturday morning from 11:00 a.m. to noon. Parents, please bring you children to see this new area and get them involved in wanting to read. We have a great selection of children's books and we continue to get new ones every month. This library is all about you. Take advantage of the free service we offer our little patrons.

Live and Silent Auction

Just in time for Christmas Gifts! There will be a Live and Silent Auction Fundraiser for the El Rito Library on Saturday, December 2, 2006, between 1:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. at the new El Rito Community Center (located on the west side of the Northern New Mexico College). Professional Auctioneer (and Library Board Member) Donald Martinez Jr. will be auctioning off items donated by artists and vendors. Some items will include: art work, gift certificates for services, Quilt from El Rito Quilter’s Guild, local crafts, camping gear, a tree, dog and cat food, and much, much more. There will be door prizes and refreshments. All proceeds go to the El Rito Library.

REQUEST FOR DONATIONS - We are asking local artists and vendors from El Rito, Abiquiu, Ojo Caliente, Espanola, and all surrounding communities to contribute items or services to the above auction fundraiser. If you wish to donate, please call the Library at 581-4608 and bring your items to the Library by November 22, 2006. Thank you.

“Death by Chocolate”

On October 14th and 15th, and for the third year in a row, the El Rito Library will be participating in the El Rito Studio Tour and will be selling chocolate desserts at the Library. “Death by Chocolate” has been very popular during the studio tour. One can escape into chocolate heaven and endulge on the sweet treats baked by our community members who make this fundraising event a success every year. There will also be coffee and hot tea available. See you there!
